The Inexplicable John McCain
Here we go again.
On Senator Mitch McConnell's decision to invoke the “nuclear option” to abolish the filibuster on presidential Supreme Court nominations so that Neil Gorsuch may be placed on SCOTUS, I give you John McCain, maverick, on the ramifications.
“Idiot, whoever says that is a stupid idiot, who has not been here and seen what I’ve been through and how we were able to avoid that on several occasions,” McCain said Wednesday, recalling past efforts to defuse these judicial confirmation wars. “And they are stupid and they’ve deceived their voters because they are so stupid.”
Even though there's some discussion over whether this really is the end of the Republic, good on ya, John! You believe this--country over party, institutional integrity over short-term gain, process over politics, sanity over stupidity--
Wait, what's this?
Even so, McCain will support McConnell’s move to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for reaching a final vote on approving Supreme Court justices to lifetime appointments.
For the love of cloture, really? You haven't even finished putting your foot down and you're already picking it up and apologizing for having done so? What is it it with you, anyway? You're 80-years-old, you're a multi-millionaire, you have how many homes, you're never going to be president, you've had a distinguished career, your colleagues think roughing it is missing the last flight home on a Friday out of Reagan National (while you loved the country and your brothers in arms enough to stay in a North Vietnamese prison camp for five years until all were released and were subject to daily beatings so now you can't raise your arms above your head), but you can't find the vertebra for this fight, the internal fortitude to stand up to Mitch McConnell and the rest on blowing up a senatorial procedure?
The hell?
And, while we're on the subject, you were not exactly a proud, tear-stained letter home after caving to George Bush on torture, either.
Abba Eban once said of Yasser Arafat, "He never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity."
Not you, though.
You stood up when it mattered, during that terrible, dark moment in our country's history when you stared those executives from Cumulus Media and asked why they stopped playing The Dixie Chicks?
